A-P fluoroscopic image demonstrating contrast outlining the left S1 nerve root. This pattern of contrast is different than a typical lumbar nerve root pattern, due to the more antero-posterior (front-back) as opposed to sagittal (side) exit of the sacral nerve roots from the spinal canal. This procedure is typically performed for a condition that causes irritation to the left S1 nerve root, such as a paracentral disc herniation at L5-S1. A mixture of steroid and local anesthetic is injected surrounding the offending nerve root following contrast administration. In cases of uncertainty, this procedure may also be performed with local anesthetic alone for diagnostic purposes.
