A New York Times article this week highlights the trends of increased medical testing in certain areas of the country that, in most cases, may not be necessary. As noted in a 2012 analysis by the New York Times, more than twice the number of nuclear stress tests, echocardiograms and vascular ultrasounds were ordered per Medicare patient in doctor’s offices in Florida compared to Massachusetts. While some diagnostic testing may be necessary given the the transition in care in many cases, this article calls attention to the excessive nature of medical testing that occurs in certain regions of the country. To ensure optimal care, patients should speak with their regular physicians to ensure proper transition of care with physicians elsewhere.
